THE INSIDE LINE ON 2019 COONALPYN AORC ROUNDS
Just nine days out from rounds eight and nine of 2019 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship, we check-in with Wes Haydon from Host Club, Gawler Motorcycle Club to get the lowdown of what conditions await the riders ahead of the tour’s first visit to Coonalpyn, South Australia.
We’ve just come off a sand round at Broken Hill, so we’re set for another test in the trying conditions but this time in a sprint format, what can the riders expect?
The weekend will involve every type of terrain you can think of, from sand, through to some Malley scrub, to some hard-packed clay. The variety of the terrain is unbelievable – and it’s all in one venue across three tracks.
Track one – Yamaha WR Test
It’s open-flowing sand, followed by a little bit of Malley scrub. It’s quite a fast-flowing and fun test.
Track two – Off-Road Advantage Test
It’s tight Malley scrub, with some hard-pack clay in it.
Track three – bLU cRU Test
It’s tight-packed clay and Malley scrub, with plenty of viewing for spectators.
What tips do you have for competitors over both rounds, in preparation for the upcoming Coonalpyn weekend?
Be prepared for variety – it’s not one type of terrain. Versatility is the key to performing well in Coonalpyn.
What goes into planning, preparing and executing a sprint format round? What makes Coonalpyn unique?
It’s not every day you can race at a venue that has such a cross-section of terrain. We also have some pine plantation, so it’s not often you encounter such a layout. The weather has been cold but fine, so conditions will be prime for the event.
